Master it. This means gaining all the AP needed to fill the stars which indicate the Materia's level. Whenever you master any materia, it duplicates itself. The duplicate starts with no AP though.

Mime takes shedloads of AP to Master though, so the best way of doing so is to equip it in either Cloud's "Apocalypse" or Cid's "Venus Gospel" weapon.

This will give your Mime Materia 3 times the standard amount of AP when you defeat monsters, making you able to Master it in a third of the time.

If you've got to the Northern Crater already there's the swamp-type area where you can fight these 3 little red balls called "Movers" - they give you LOADS of AP for defeating them, which is very very useful!

(Also the Magic Pots gives lots of AP if you're willing to use Elixirs on them to be able to damage and defeat them.)

You also can't Master the Underwater Materia even know it keps track of AP won with it equipped. I think that may have been an error on Square's part when writing the code for it.

You see, the Underwater Materia only has one single star so technically it's aleady at Master level, and since you would only ever need it for that one time you defeat Emerald WEAPON they really didn't need to bother making it count AP.

Of course after you've defeated Emerald WEAPON you can sell the Underwater Materia and turn the AP recorded on it into Gil. If you have it equipped in a x2 or x3 growth weapon, you would get more money (obviously).
