is this game online/single play or is it online only as i saw the xbox 360 version with a sign saying "1-player"

It is single player, no one else can play on the same console as you, but it is online, specifically massively multiplayer online role-playing game, MMORPG. So yes, it is online, they are just saying single player because you cannot have two people playing on the same screen.

And to further specify, it IS online ONLY.
There's no way to play without being online. It's not like some of the other console MMOs where you can play offline and online at your own discretion. Without internet, you can't play FFXI at all.
