Post SE Prosecutes Copyright Infringers

Interesting news ---

Yesterday, Square Enix announced that they have reached settlement with an infringer of the company's copyright of the movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. This person uploaded a copy of the movie onto Google Video. Square Enix then requested that Google take it down. Google complied, and then Square Enix 'located' and prosecuted the culprit. This person admitted to the action on April 17, 2006 and agreed to pay a sum of money not specified.

Many users have been torrenting and downloading illegal copies of Advent Children for months now... Although it is a very small fraction, SE is one of the few large entertainment companies trying to stop it.

"In connection with the release of the movie, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, we are actively pursuing those who commit intellectual property infringement against our company," said Yasuhiko Hasegawa, Square Enix's General Manager of Legal Affairs. "Any illegal activities, including the illegal uploading of Square Enix content to Internet sites and the unauthorized copying of Square Enix games, music, movies, images, and other intellectual property, will be prosecuted. While Square Enix appreciates the enthusiasm of its fans, and values its relationship with them, it is also obligated to protect its intellectual property rights, or risk weakening or losing the very rights that enable the company to continue to provide its fans with an exciting entertainment experience."

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children will release on DVD and UMD in the U.S. on April 24, 2006.

Awww, looks like somebodies crying because some people don't either have the money to buy their things or do not want wait for the copy to be released. I'm actually quite sure this downloading and torrents number of downloads is at a much higher rate than they suspect, lol. I mean seriously, I doubt anyone in hollywood or whatever knows the true extent of the pirates ability to get everything they wish. But that was rather stupid for that guy to upload it onto a internationally used site.

Anyway SE should stop pressing their luck. When Napster was around hardly anyone was caught, along with many other p2p programs. When they take down one another surfaces. They should stop bitching now and let people go on with their life.

This was bound to happen. Infringement happens with just about every big-name movie/company, but, as Devil said, you wouldn't expect the infringer to be that dumb. I mean, come on, Google? Really.

Its their own fault.
Just dont let European and American people wait that long, man.
If you advertise for 2 years, people get OR uninterested OR annoyed.
And yeha its pretty stupid what that guy did, but its just lame to prosecute one person when thousands of people have done the same thing. Im sure that more than half of the FF fans have downloaded the movie.

No, it's not that. It's more of this...STOP FUCKING CONFIRMING IT'S COMING OUT NEXT MONTH! Since they created it, month after month I had confirminations that it was going to be released, (a personal email from them also after I bitch slapped them over the head with proof), and then where was it? OH YEAH! NOT RELEASED! Their biggest problem was promising to us. They have a ton of hardcore fans and if they lie to us more than once we're definitely going to be pissed. I'm just happy they have a REAL confirmination now.

Well, pissed? Thats kind of an understatement! I was a huge fan of the FF series as I've completed all of the ones I could get my hands on, but then they made FFX-2 which I didn't like, FFXI which I can't afford and my ISP is terrible. And now I have to wait for another few months to see a movie which nearly every fan of the series will want to see. I do push for quality over quantity, but seriously how long does it take to record roughly and hour of talking, about 5000 lines of text and and few minor changes! If I was them I would of done it at the same time as making the movie as they would of saved a lot of time. There would of still been people downloading it, but people like me wouldn't have to, and just go and buy the damn DVD.

Good. They should get on their ass. Piracy is illegal, and wrong.

You wanna see the movie? Get in line and wait. I have. It sucks yeah, but thats life. Don't have the money for it? Get a job. Can't get a job? Have a friend or family member get it for you... There are other ways.

Theres a crapload of music I want out there, but I bite the bullet and I buy the albums I want. There's some games out there I want, but I buy those too. The rest of us that actually work for a living and don't steal things, should not have to pay higher prices for media because some fat, lazy bastard can steal it off the internet.

Set me on fire if you want, but thats how I feel.

lol, another goody-two-shoes, eh? There isn't much relevance to your post with the thread, but I'll tell you this...most movies, music, and other entertainment is directed towards teenagers. This means a large crowd of people who CAN'T GET A GOOD AS JOB AS SOME PEOPLE! But they love to squeeze out every penny from them because they can and know most teenagers feelings of ignorance and impatience. I assure you, the high prices are not caused by the people stealing, but by the companies setting out the prices in the first place.

It's like those Auto repair garages, if you crush your left door from some asshole who ran into you it'll cost about as much as it does for the car to get it fix, which is complete bullshit. But you don't see those guys easing up their prices when they got you by the balls.

Now, there are some people who pirate when they have enough money to buy any one item a hundred times over...but piracy was invented as a "steal from the rich and give to the poor" thoughts, don't think of them so much less because even if they have a job most of the money goes to what...car insurance, relationships, and other life shit that burns a big ass hole in your pocket. Stealing is wrong, but it has been justified in the past as the right course of action. If piracy can bring the prices down so a good compromising price then less of it will be commited, but every business doesn't give a shit.

So like every other person I've seen say the same thing as you have, get a better opinion on the matter before thinking badly of the subject.

A better opinion?

STEALING IS WRONG. Thats it. You can respectfully disagree, but dont tell me that I am wrong. Its my opinion. You can't say its misguided, or misinformed. Its the law. Plain and simple.

I was a teenager once too. I was raised to work and pay for the things you want....

I don't think less of anyone who pirates material. I have my vices too. Its just what I believe personally. I did not say one thing insulting to those who did indulge in the activity. You wanna steal? Good for you.

And by the way, the thread was about SE cracking down on piracy and my thoughts about it. I shared my thoughts. Completely relevant.

No offense, Devil, but just because someone disagrees with you, does not mean they are wrong, or misguided. Thats just the way people are.

Did I mention once in my post that you were wrong? Stealing is wrong, to an extent. Would you deny a piece of food to a starving boy because he can't pay for it? That's basically the same thing. Hell, nearly everything we have is overly priced because we can't do shit about it but sit here and try to get it through their thick skulls. And all we get out of them is "It's only business", which proves how gutless they really are. Now, let's make an example of wrong doing by in the papers quite a few months ago some dumbass teen broke into someone's house, stole their games, and killed a girl who was sleeping just to then pawn the games. That is lawless, cruel, pathetic.

The thing is dude, just because you act like a law biting citizen doesn't mean the justice system is right. People sue left and right because their pride is hurt so childishly and irrational families put other kids in jail because they won't see past their own ass to see how much grieve some of those criminals actually have for what they do. It's all finger pointing blaming today. It's wrong, it's unlawful, but it is not immoral unless you make it so. And just like in this thread SE's joining the bandwagon on a never-ending struggle that they and thousands of other people lost over and over. As long as people have a connection and a vast knowledge about it all there will always be a way to get the things that are overpriced. There will always be people who would rather use 20 bucks to pay for gas money then a medicore movie they like.

I'd like to see you play judge and try not to feel guilty for throwing people's lives away because they aren't rich as you. Indeed the US is so mighty.

P.S. - I'm also not saying that people shouldn't go unpunished, but today one man can get up to 10 years in jail for stealing when a rapist can get 3-7 and probation.

Part of the reason prices on media (CDs, movies, etc) are as high as they are is due to piracy. However, one guy deciding to pay for it at the ass high price is not going to bring that price down. Piracy screwed me right in the ass back when I bought movies and music, so I decided to go the free route. I pay for this bandwidth anyway, why not use it to its max?

Due to the size of the pirate community, I was able to purchase a PowerEdge and am able to pay for the bandwidth necessary to run my websites, enabling me to make my living the way I want to. And that way is utilizing the computer science knowledge that I've worked hard my entire life to acquire.

Let me get this right, they wanted to stop people being able to watch Advent Children, even though they've not made it available to the American audience yet?

Well they have nobody to blame but themselves for taking so long to release it to the USA and Western audiences.

I have no sympathy for them if they never made Advent Children able to get except by illegally downloading it.
