FFII-defense help

I have just started playing FFII after all this time. I don't know what has taken me so long to get to it, but anyways I am having problems now. Maybe it has been too long since playing the older games, but I have somehow put my fighters in the "back row" where they are basically useless in battle. Please take pity on me and tell me how I can put them back in the "front row". I know it is probably something ridiculously simple, but my fried brain can't figure it out at the moment. Thanks!

all you have to do is go to the menu, then highlight your characters and press the confirm button twice. That should get your characters back in the front row, but, if that doesn't work, let me know.

yeah, and if you want better defence in the front row, attack yourself.(I know this seems odd but it increases health a shiz load and your defence goes way up too.)
