Square Enix Sets The Record Straight Regarding Next-Gen Rumors

Last week, TFF posted news regarding possible Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest titles on the next generation titles. As good as it may have seemed to some of us, Square Enix is clearing up the confusion/rumors and seemed a little 'ticked' about the whole situation.

Rumors were pouring last week that Square-Enix would be bringing Final Fantasy XIII and Dragon Quest 9 to the Xbox 360 and/or the Revolution in addition to the PS3.

Square-Enix has decided to kill this rumor with the following statement released today:

"Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Microsoft Corporation, and Nintendo Co., Ltd. all have expressed plans to release next-generation game consoles between the years 2005 and 2006.

In this regard, speculation about the availability of Final Fantasy series and Dragon Quest series games on these systems has been reported on various media. However, we have made no concrete decision on our strategic direction of this issue.

We will continue to disclose any important information regarding business operations immediately after we make any relevant decision."

If you'll recall, Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles was announced for the Revolution at E3, where Final Fantasy XI for the Xbox 360 was also revealed. And Final Fantasy XIII was confirmed for the PS3 at TGS.

This all seems a little confusing, and Square Enix certainly isn't making it easy for us gamers. What will they have in store for us for the next general consoles...? Only time can tell.

This is all chaos. I need to know which systems FF mainstream titles will be available on before I fork out 500 bucks. I don't see why they won't do PC like VII and VIII. PC's are more than capable of handling the best graphics. The ps3 and 360 doesn't even come close to the possibilities you have with a comp.

Also, is crisis core the only planned square enix release so far for the psp?

Yes, and no. I don't feel like going into detail, but the 360 will surpass current PC hardware in graphics and processing power. Although PC graphics won't take long to play catch-up, it will be a while before PCs have 3 cores with 2 threads each...look it up on google if you wanna know more.

Well, I can promise you right now that FFXIII-XV will be released on the PS3. Sony and Square-Enix made that quite clear a few months ago. The only question was whether those three titles would also be multiplatform.

The talks of FF:CC for the Revolution aren't rumor, but they're not solid plans yet, either. Time will reveal Square-Enix's final say on that one.

I don't want to argue, but my 800 dollar pc outperforms the 360 graphics wise and anyone who knows gaming pc's knows 800 is nothing. I have a friend who's spent over 4k into his Paladin SLI which levels a 360. For the price, nothing compares with an xbox. For 400 dollars you can have the ultimate console, but gaming in pc has been at that level for several years now.

No.

There's no way an XBOX 360 can out render me.

2.5GHz AMD 3200+
2x nVidia GeForce 6600GTs overclocked to surpass 6800GTs. These are in SLI, btw, or will be when BFG fixes them.
1.5GB Dual Channel DDR 533MHz RAM
Gigabit Ethernet
SATA2 3GB/s bandwidth HDD

All for a little over twice the cost of a 360.

an XBOX 360 can't beat that.

I really wanna ditch the 6600GTs and get a single 7800GTX. SLI is more trouble than it's worth, and the lack of vsync support makes screen tearing a serious issue there. Amongst other things, there's a lot of bullshit with SLI that I really don't wanna get into.

Yeah but itll take a while for ff 13 to be released since ff12 comes out in 2006 in Japan.

Please, learn something about how processors work and their efficiency before making statements like this. Just because a processor has 3 cores it doesn't mean that it automatically makes it better. The biggest effect that it has is that it makes it a lot harder for a programmer to attain full potential. In fact the cores used in the 360 are supposed to be pretty gimped compared to an all purpose processor such as the x86. Although the 360 is currently better than the top of the line computers, this won't stand for, long just like every recent generation. Although you can expect better graphics in the coming years as programmers attain more of the full potential, expect it to happen like the ps2. That is, if they even become efficient enough at using the cores which may prove a greater challenge than the ps2 or saturn.

Over the years I have found trying to deal with companies like Square-Enix is very frustrating.

Especially when they decide to jump ship and change hardware lines. At this point if Square-Enix, in particular, were to exclusively go to another platform I don't know that I would follow.

I, and probably a lot of other gamers, would like to see multiplatform gaming going on here. Final Fantasy for all. Afterall it would be nice if everyone had a chance to experience this franchise...

Anyhow that's how I feel... change platforms and I'm gone.. regretably....

I can't see Square ditching Sony seeing as Square usually go by sales on Jap as a target and Sony are the biggest console in Japan (and I cant see that changing according to reports in Japan) and if they ditched Sony they would lose alot of money

I can just see them putting the series on muliti platform

That might be true, but Son'ys new system will be much harder to code for than the X-Box 360. This is another reason why Microsoft is gaining 3rd party support. The system is much easier to code for, and the tools are more developer friendly.

Square Enix said it isn't set in concret their response, nor have they said Fianl Fantasy/Dragon Quest will NOT come out on other systems. For all intents and purposes we might see a shift of platforms.

Think of it. All the fans that buy Sony for Square, Capcom, and others games would switch if the games went to another system. The games make the fans, not the system.
