In a recent interview with Reuters, Square Enix president Yoichi Wada, disclosed that the company may consider releasing new installments of its Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest RPG series on both the PS3 and the XBox 360.
"We will decide by E3 in May [2006] as to whether to release them on both the PS3 and Xbox, or just one platform," Wada told Reuters. Through the years, both Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest have been known to be exclusive to only one single platform. Both of the series made their debut on Nintendo in the 1980's, but in the mid 1990's Square Enix slowly shifted it's attention to the Sony Playstation. That said, there have been exceptions to the two RPG series' platform exclusivity. The massively multiplayer RPG Final Fantasy XI is currently available for both the PC and PlayStation 2 and will be released on the Xbox 360 next year. The spin-off Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles was released for the GameCube in 2004, and plans for a Revolution version have been announced. Reissues of older FF games have been released for the Game Boy Advance, including the forthcoming Final Fantasy IV Advance. Slime MoriMori: Dragon Quest 2 is coming soon to the DS in Japan. There have also been mobile versions of both series, as well as Final Fantasy releases on the now-dead Wonderswan Color platform. Source: Gamespot |

What the hell?
I seriously hope they don't do this. Sony and Nintendo are the homes of SquareEnix, and it should stay that way. Microsoft's fan base (hardcore XBOX players) aren't even RPGers to start with, most people who will own a 360 are also going to buy a PS3. This is a bad buisness move against Sony, because it takes away an edge they have (As having the largest RPG producer making games mostly for them) and I'm sure they'd fight to keep new FF and DQ games exclusive to them. Didn't Sony pay Square a lot of money a few years back to keep FF exclusive to them during the PS2's era? (As in, the numbered series) or something. Ah, wait, no. Sony just bought up a bunch of Square's stock, didn't they? I can't really remember. I, personally, dislike the XBOX, and the XBOX 360. I really do not want to see Microsoft get an edge by getting Squaresoft FF support. |

This is good news I think. It let's gamers who can only afford one console experience FF. There are no good RPG's for xbox and a FF release would get a lot of sales. I know personally, the only reason I'd consider buying a ps3 is because of FF.

What REALLY irks me is how games that are supposedly "multiplatform" these days tend to never include Nintendo.
From a business standpoint, it would be brilliant for Square-Enix to go multiplatform, even if that does mean only the PS3 and XBox360. Am I happy that they never mentioned Nintendo? Of course not, but at the same time, I'm not the one running the company. It's ultimately their decision, you know. If Square-Enix decided to stretch all three consoles with the next generation of Final Fantasy titles, that would be great. They'd reel in plenty of cash, heh. (Not like they need any more.)

I agree. Not only that, but what if Sony's system is up the roof in cash, and no one wants it? This coupled with the other examples given are good enough for them to port it.
In an industry thats suffering its a good idea.

The Final Fantasy releases on Xbox 360 would probably be remakes only. The Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XI would be ported to PS3. One strategy, stated in RPGFan.com, would be that Square Enix develops the new Final Fantasy games originally for PC and then port them to the consoles.

Braska, did you read the article?
Square-Enix said they are considering making the next gen FF titles multiplatform.

Please no multi-platform FF Square Enix. This just means that we will have to wait much longer for them to actually develop the game, and not only that, the quality will also be suffering because they have to think of both systems throughout the development.
I'm just hoping that Sony buys up more Square Enix stock so that they once again have a tight grip on their testicles. |

Well, you all have good points. Here's my thing though...
I support Microsoft, and dislike Sony for many reasons. So I would obviously want my FFs on the 360. But...the only reason I plan on getting a PS3 (or another PS2 for that matter...) is for RPGs, with a few exceptions (DMC, etc.). So if SE starts putting RPGs on the 360, people won't have a reason to buy a PS3...I know there are very few games worth buying a console for (Halo and FFs is about it). As far as I know there isn't going to be a huge difference in hardware...both systems have the same features, right? I can see how this would upset many anti-MS people. Cuz I know I wouldn't want Halo to be on the PS3 lol. So, you would think I'd be for it, but like Kenneth mentioned, I rather have to buy another console than have the quality of FFs decline, and them take longer to make ![]() I mean, for god's sake, look how long it's taking KH2 and FFXII just for one console...
