Tips for a first time player
Like the title says, I'm just starting this game for the first time. Any good tips (not spoilers) to make things less frustrating?

FFIX isn't super frustrating, so you shouldn't have to worry about that. My best advice, have any kind of alcohol/narcotic/cigarette/prescription drug within arm's reach to deal with Quina and how annoying that goddam thing is. Other than that, kick back and enjoy. There's a rich storyline in FFIX.

I agree completely. The battle system is not confusing one bit and the rest of the game is also very easy to understand. As Raven said, the storyline is very enjoyable and also involving (at least it was for me). Quina should also not be that big of a problem if you neglect him (thats if you dont like him of course).

My advice is to get out some snacks and a cold soda and get ready for one of the best FF games ever! Also make sure to level up alot before you face a new boss or hit a new town that way I'll be ahead of things and have fun at the same time!

O.o. No need to spend any time levelling up till the one from final boss, trust me with moderate skill you can obliterate all bosses, except maybe a few.
When all characters available. Dagger > Eiko. And dont buy every new weapon, it's uneccesary. |

My advice is to make sure your characters are learning new abilities, make sure you equip the abilities and steal some items from the bosses. They can be equipment that you get later in the game and can save you money. This really isn't a hard game.

Make sure that you have Vivi and a healer. Don't forget that you can cast cure on everyone in your party. I forgot that until after I beat the game >.<

Don't sell old equipment and weapons unless you really need to, it always helps out when you come to synthesis.

if you want to avoid frustration, avoid the chocobo side quest, it takes a lot to complete. however it's rewards are quite impressive. excellent game, and very under rated.

...I liked it.
I loved every FF from 6 and up... I would recommend the "Frog" side quest, with Quina. Gets alot of stuff + worth the time!
