like the Naruto fighting game maybe with it's own little extras but not setup the way tekken is...it's bad enough games like Virtua fighter and Tekken have sketchy/laggy movement...if it was 2d like Naruto (but not like DBZ Budokai!) and SNKvsCapcom then yeah it might be a good party favor...or even just to pass for a sprite-maker to create..but it probably wouldn't sell..unless it was something like Bloody Roar IV.

You do remember we're talking about Final Fantasy here, right?

A Final Fantasy fighting game would FLY off the shelf -- doubly so if it had the Tekken name on it. Yeah, you may be thinking to yourself "man, that's really cheesy," but consider the sheer amount of fanboyism regarding this series.

To be honest, if something like this ever came around, I might even pick up a copy. And I absolutely loathe the way Square-Enix whores out its popular products.

Think of it like the Super Smash Bros. series. The games are incredibly cheesy, but who DOESN'T have fun while playing them? A FF fighter would likely make for a great party game -- I can't imagine it would be much of a "real" fighting game, like Tekken, Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat, and other such series.

To the topic itself, if something like this were to ever happen, I'd rather it not be Tekken-based. A style similar to that of SSB should be adopted (not necessarily art style, just gameplay style), and a potentially great game could be produced.

i only say that because final fantasy has always been an RPG...i guess you're right but it'd be pretty crazy to do..would stray immensely from the game's usual blasts of amazing storylines and characters.

But is it really that different from pulling Roy and Marth out of Fire Emblem, and placing them in SSB:M? And what of Link and Zelda? Ness from Earthbound? They're all RPG games. (Well, the Zelda series is debatable.) Now, I know Square-Enix isn't Nintendo, but Nintendo does stuff like this all the time. And they're highly successful with it.

What if Square had stayed with Nintendo instead of going to Sony? Don't you think Cloud would've been an unlockable character in SSB, and Tidus in SSB:M?

Actually, the more I think about this, the more I think an idea like this could be successful, if done in a similar fashion. You're right -- the game would bomb if it were typical fighter-style. It just doesn't fit the characters the way it should.

And don't forget, SE provided us with FFVII Snowboarding. I'm sure they'll try anything once to make money. They just need the right formula.

Zidane v. Red XIII

...could be interesting.

Hell yes! I would buy this game instantly, assuming it was done in a SSB manner. I am far more a FF fanboy than I am a Nintendo fan boy (which seems to be the popular ideal around here, although the former is universal). I would like to think that they would include EVERY character from all of the games (save maybe FFXI....except for mithra.), but that's probably asking too much. Either way, it would be a good oppertunity to rough up some of your most hated characters. Anyone up for wailing on Edward?

a final fantasy/tekken i would buy it instantly! that would be cool
but it would have to be more like a dbz fighting game, because you can use different magic or energy as it were! lol

ive had this idea in my head for years...

Would it be Soul Calibur style with weapons?
Or fisticuffs?

If the former, i can imagine a few epic sword battles hehe

P.S. when i originally saw this topic i thought did it mean a Tekken RPG?, that would be pretty cool, although it probably would work best as a Action RPG.

true it had always been an rpg, but now with the compilation of ff7, they're making ffs in all kinds of genres. shooting, action, etc
so anyhow, i would like it. im not a fan of fighting games, but hey, its a final fantasy! it would probably be something like erhgheiz (sp?) but with only ff characters

This was already done, sorta, back in 97 w/ Ehrgeiz.

Had Cloud, Tifa and Sephiroth as characters you could use to duke it out (along side the normal array of characters in the game) - meet certain criterias and you can unlock Yuffie, Vincent and Zack (aswell as new costumes). It was a good game but lacked a fanbase due to whatever reason ~.~ shame that.
