Feels more like Purgatory than anything. It's hard to say, considering I've never been to Heaven or Hell.

Actually, I take that back. I've been to Hell. In the states, it's called "Iowa".

I am told there is a Hell, Michigan and a Paradise, Michigan or Heaven, Michigan, but as my roommate likes to joke you can to from Heaven to Hell in six hours. >.>

But anyway, I would have to agree that the Farplane is more like Purgatory or Limbo, though they are roughly the same. Considering we do not know how it really works, one popular belief in Spira is that it contains the souls of the death that are sent or have accepted their death in life. And those souls travel there and become the pireflies and when people who know them come, they can be summoned, at least an image can be. Though as the Al Bhed believe, or at least Rikku, it is just made up of pyreflies that react to thoughts and images in the persons mind and reveals them to you as an image.

Now if Rikku's idea is correct, then the Farplane is nothing more than a holographic projection connected to your thoughts. Which would make it neither of the suggestions.

If the Yevon belief is correct then, it is a hold celling or last resting place for all souls, good or bad. Which is make it more of a Limbo or Purgatory, since you do not have to be good or evil, to get in just be sent.

I dont really think it holds resemblance to heaven or hell (although the landscapes are pretty sweet), just somewhere to go after death.

ALl i can say is that the Farplane resembles the deception of Yevon it looks all good on the inside but really it is full of evil so really it is just a place to live out your second life.

I think the farplane is more like purgatory just like a place you wait until you are judged

Remember, folks, the Japanese animators of Final Fantasy aren't necessarily Christian, and they draw on a wide range of mythologies to create their worlds. (Notice Odin, Shiva, Ifrit, and Ixion all kicking around together-- that's Norse, Hindu, Arab, and Greek mythology respectively.)

That said, I think it would be in keeping with the general theme of FFX that it would be hell for some, heaven for others, and it would depend very strongly on what you brought with you psychologically.

The pyreflies on the Farplane viewing area tended to show people what they wanted to see-- not necessarily consciously (Tidus seeing his dead mom) but unconsciously. So it may let the dead sort through their feelings. Shuyin lingered on with his hate. Tidus seemed just fine. The glimpses we have of Braska, Jecht, and Auron suggest they're the same as ever. (Disconcertingly so... Auron, you were supposed to give up the Guardian schtick and take a vacation in Bermuda!)

But the area where Vegnagun was lodged were very scary. Shuyin and the weapon itself seemed to be warping things there into badness.

Quite possibly, the Farplane isn't one plane, but many.

Yes... I don't really think the farplane is Heaven OR Hell.

My thoughts? It's where the consciousness of the dead goes to rest. No absolute pain, or joy, or feeling.

If it had any of those things, death would be absolutely meaningless.

A type of Purgatory I'm led to believe, but certainly more like Hell of the two, for some obvious reasons.

1) You could see the one's you loved there very true, which is a good thing. However you cannot touch them, or talk to them properly, you can speak to them in a one sided conversation yes. But say your sorry for something, you can never acquire forgiveness from the spirits.

2) In certain area's there are monster's. Monster's are a concept of hell and suffering. They attack living intruder's, but it can be believed that they also attack the spirits living there, leading to a concept of eternal suffering after death with no escape, as your trapped in the farplane.

Plus it contains those who followed Yevon, and those who renounced his teaching as well. Like a limbo.

There my thoughts, could be wrong but to me they make sense.
