Actually, I always thought that the bard was a "her"... but you may be right. If that is a dude, then it would make sense to be Gilbert (or Edward, depending on if you played FF4J or FF2US). Seems a lot like the kind of thing Square would do... put cameos of previous characters in their games.
Cain/Kain (or rather, his sprite) also makes a cameo. Dress Butz/Bartz up as a Dragoon to see it. |

So do the FF1 sprites. If you dress Bartz/Butz as Knight, Black Mage, Red Mage, Monk or Thief you get the original sprites (well, not for the Thief, but if you notice the PSX version, both Thief and Thief Bartz have a hood and the same color). Also, Reina/Lenna has the White Mage sprite.
Also, most of the FF3 sprites also make an appearance, since FF3 and FF5 classes are quite similar. Mostly, the Sorcerer/Mystic Knight sprite and Krile/Cara's White Mage sprite, which looks like a Shaman sprite. Yep, FF is prone to Easter eggs... |

Have u actually played w/the Shaman job change(then uv reached far). But anyhoo,u forgot that the Ninja of Dawn of souls and Bartz in the Ninja job are the same so is Black mage(DOS).But it is known that square likes to put in unmentioned cameos of there previous games charcters. The Kain's Lance has been in most games since Final Fantasy IV.

It might be referring to Edward, it's hard to say really. Seems kind of mental to have the most hated character from FFIV make a cameo in V, but I guess it's possible. Now a cameo from Cecil, that would be nice. Dark Knight Cecil, not that pansy ass paladin.

I didn't notice the bard, so I can't comment on that but I doubt it's Edward.
As far as the similarities between the sprites and there previous game counterparts, I think that was Square just be lazy with the graphics in this game. I mean who here hasn't suggested that yet? They just took the easy way out with the graphics and copied what they could. While I agree they look similar, I doubt it was intentional cameo appearances of the older characters. More like copying because it's faster and easier than designing new.
