FFVI-2: Not so Far away
Apparently, the latest issue of Game Informer says that in a new interview Yoshinori Kitase is considering making spinoffs in similar vein as FFVII for FFVI!
I hope to HELL that's not a typo. Why? Because I WANT to see FFVI get some damn attention among the mainstream. I know I know, a lot of is here think FFVI is good the way it is and all that. But I would like to see the characters reimagined SOMEHOW. Characters from FFVII and after just get too much attention. I want to see a fully realized 3D Terra or Celes or even characters that DIDN'T make it into the PSX FMVs like Cyan or Leo. |

Yeah, it'd be awesome. I remember always hoping to see some old school characters in Kindgom Hearts (which I still think they need to do).
Still, if this is the first we'd heard of FFVI spin offs... I'm not going to get my hopes up yet.

Yeah I'm really skeptical too. I mean PSM apparently had a little article on KHII and it said "Sora is still looking for Rikku (From FFX and X-2.."
Now coupled with Nomura's recent announcement of using charactrs he didn't design (this would include FFIV,V,VI, and IX) in KHII. I would say the best idea would be throw in a couple FFVI characters in KHII to get people "interested" in FFVI again and then make the spinoffs/remakes/whatever. They kind of did that with KHI and FFVII, except the demand has ALWAYS been there. EDIT: Oh and I think Yocihi Wada said something a couple years back about later FFs being spinoffs of early FFs, so I wouldn't say this is COMPLETELY new. |

I didn't wish prequels/sequels/etc. on Final Fantasy VII, and I'm not going to wish it on Final Fantasy VI. Instead of pumping out spinoffs they should instead try making something original for the Final Fantasy series, which I haven't seen in a while. Matsuno is doing his part, but it's coming in slowly, and Kitase and Nomura only working on fan-pleasers doesn't help.
I hope that they at least get Amano back into the mix, hopefully with Uematsu as well. But geez...They were wearing on my nerves before, but now it's...Ugh.

Hello, I'm a new member. ^_^V
FFVI is my favorite out of all the Final Fantasy's, and I was actually thinking about a FFVI-2 a couple of days ago. I was thinking, instead of making a whole new adventure with the characters, what about the missing pieces in the game? When the world was destroyed, we awoke as Celes and found out that a whole year has passed. From there on, the others are found and they save the day. But, what I want to know is what the other characters did in that year. Did Sabin ever try to get inside Figaro? How did Strago end up with the Kefka fanatics? And someone please tell me how Locke got through the Phoenix Cave on his own. I think it would be cool to see a FFVI-2, but as a filler. The game would explore each character and what they did, how they felt. Well, that's my personal opinion. It would shine light on spots in the game and it might not flop as much as a sequel may. (I was not fond of FFX-2. I didn't even like FFX x.x) |

I take seeing FFVI being remade/spun off as a lesser of two evils. I'd rather see Square branch out into other genres like they did in the PSX days (Ehrgeiz, Bushido Blade, etc etc)
Graphics are nice sure. What I meant about the graphics not meaning anything is the fact that a game shouldn't be enjoyed JUST for graphics. In the FF Redone topic, one of the posters made it sound like FFVI's original graphics didn't matter anymore and that it had to be remade. Which I think is perposterus. I mean you're talking to an SNK fan here Merlin ![]() HOWEVER, that doesn't mean I completely opposed to the thought of seeing FFVI remade just so that it can get attention from the mainstream again. I mean, as silly as it may sound I just want to go to say the G4 Boards or turn on G4 and see FFVI characters being talked about again among new generation gamers because these days it's all about Cloud, and Yuna, And Tifa. But do people care about awesome characters like Cyan? Terra? Celes? No. And as for that other comment, yeah I just wouldn't mind seeing a fully realized Terra (and even voice acted) and company just to see the current generation's opinion of her. I'm sure if Square redid her and other characters they'd gain a little more respect. Hope that explains it. I'm opposed to thought of improving FFVI just to appease the latest generation of graphics whores, but at the same time, part of me just likes the idea that FFVI is getting some attention. Better VI then say VIII which is where I thought it was going to go. EDIT: Yeah I remember that last comment. A COMPLETELY 3D remake of FFVI would be a little too much because it would be a completely different game. I wouldn't mind some kind of story spinoff though. Besides I said the games don't NEED to the remade, I didn't say I was completely opposed to the idea. ![]() |

I can recall a site that showed them attempt a 3D-ish make of FFVI and dub it the proper FFVII, but I guess this way works even better. Asmuch as I'd demand the game to stay as is (as far as visuals go) it is good to see some experimentation from SE for once.
But a story spinoff? now? about 10 years after its release? lmao.. take your time. ![]()

Although, come to think of it, a prequel (possibly the War of the Magi?) would be interesting, if Square-Enix pulled it off right, which they probably wouldn't. So yeah, i'd support the making of something like that, or another game/movie explaining what all the characters did when the WoR first came about. As long as they didn't go overboard (like they're doing with FF7) or do a 3D remake of the original game, I would support them.

Oooo...Seeing this just send down eerie chills dowm my spine...
Though it might work for the best. These games had wonderful stories, the likes of which are rarely seen on new RPGs. That doesn't mean recent RPGs do not have decent storylines: heck, FF7 has a very decent storyline. It's just that times have changed, and storylines have been replaced by other things which show the power of the new systems, such as graphics. I say, if Kitase dares to touch these relics, he and his team better learn a thing or two from the classics. Which means, not repeating the things that have happened with FFX-2 or with the FF7 series, making new stuff appealing to the fan's likeliness of the game to make more money. I personally do not mind a graphic revamp, though I'll be wary, if this idea becomes reality, of Terra's revamping (that means green hair and not blonde ^_^). And especially wary of voice-acting. As for the actual idea, I wonder: you guys have mentioned about a story-between-the-story of the WoR events, and even a sequel, but rarely about the events before. I'd be more interested in a War of the Magi game than of a sequel or else. And yeah, no abusing with the game, like with FF7. BTW, Cain Quote:

Well I meant in General, you just see more people talking about new characters from VII and onward much more than the FFIV, V, and VI. I mean in most "Who's cool/hot" topics and discussions I've seen (besides here) some of the first names that come up are the likes of Cloud, Tifa, Rikku, Auron, etc etc.
I think it comes back to graphics. In all honesty, FMVs and 3D graphics not only look pretty and all that, but they do give off a level of realism and emotional depth that 16 bit SNES sprites just can't deliver (on the same level) and I guess fans can associate with the character better. Of course you can't say this for ALL 2D games. I mean if I play a game like Last Blade I get a good feelign of the characters only because they're detailed AND voice acted. If a sidestory/sequel/prequel/remake can do that, really bring out the FFVI charactyers in detail, as in not just make pretty 3D models like in the PSX FMVs but actually give them the kind of depth that newer FF characters have, I'm all for it. Sorry for the ranting ^_^;; |

Yeah, out of all the ideas tossed around in here, I think The War of The Magi *would* be the most interesting (I never really thought about it until now). The game's history is centered on the Magi War, but the war isn't in detail. You get to see snippits of the war in the WoR when traveling via Figaro, and the story of Odin, but there could be much more said. Humans and Espers used to live side by side, but how did Humans first tap into that magic themselves? Also, Esper World is unique and I would like to see more of it, how the Espers created it. And the people of Thamasa, their ancestors would be part of the plot.
Not only would a prequel be interesting, but unlike my earlier idea, it wouldn't give the chance to have the characters be ruined. I like how the characters are in FF3/6, and even though I would enjoy seeing what each character did in the WoR, I would be afraid that their original personality, their true character, would be over used or altered. For example I'll use FFX and X-2. Now, I'm not bashing the games, and I never played FFX-2, I'm just going by what I heard from people who played it. I liked Yuna's character in X. She was quiet, determined, yet softspoken and shy. But in X-2, she goes from summoner to pop princess. Just from hearing that alone, I get the impression that her personality took a big turn around. I may be wrong, she still may be like she was in X, like I said, I never played X-2, but X-2 threw me off because of the big change in character. I don't want that to happen to FF3/6. |
