Combat algorithms?
I was wondering if anyone - particularly those who have actually hacked the ROM - has figured out how combat actually works in any FF games other than I and IV (VI seems to be the logical one to ask about first, but I'm interested in all of them). For example, what does an attack power of 32 actually do, and how is it different from a 31? What determines the damage you do in combat? That sort of stuff.
A long time ago someone figured out most of this for FFI and IV and posted the results at the site that has since become rpgamer.com, and as far as I know you can still download them from there. (Can't check right this instant as the site seems to be down, but it was up a few days ago so I assume that's just temporary). But as far as I know nobody has done this for any other FF games. The only thing I'm sure of for the more recent games is that they work very differently from I and IV, both of which appear to be a good deal simpler in this respect. |

Oh there are TONS of guides on this stuff. You can usually find them on Gamefaqs, under the respected game's FAQ section. FF Tactics and FFVI have very good guides on this kind of thing, might want to check it out.
