Final Fantasy II- Weapons & Magic
Okay, I'm not very far into the game but I was wondering; is there a max on how many spells a certain character can learn? And if so what spells are must haves for which characters? Like in the first town they sell; Cure, Fire, Ice, and Bolt. Should I buy three of these so all my characters will know them? What weapons should I train my guys with?
Opinions anyone? |

Remembering all of this is kind of tough. As for the weapons, I trained Maria in Bows, Firion in Swords, Gus in Axes I think, and Leon eventually in Knife and Spear.
Each character can learn 16 spells total. There are no must haves for anyone really, it just depends how you make them up. I basically had Gus be my White Mage, Maria my Black Mage, Firion was a secondary White Mage with a few Black spells and Leon was the opposite of that. A secondary Black Mage, with a few White spells. You can train them anyway you want though, as far as I know. That's just what I did. Important Note: The hardest spell in the game to find is actually Muddle. Nowhere in the game can it be bought or found in a chest, remember when you reach the last castle that it is in the small room where the masamune is. You need to walk around in that room until you fight a group of 3 Fire Gigas'. From them can you acquire Muddle. Everything else you should find easily.

Okay that's pretty much what I've been doing with some minor differences, Firion uses swords and has some black magic, Maria uses bows and has black and white magic but mostly black, Gus uses axe's and has some white magic. And currently my other character is Minh and he's using canes, and he comes with a vast list of over powered white magic.
Is there anyway to quickly raise money early on because this Mithril stuff costs an arm and a leg? |

Not really. I basically just walked around on every panel of the world map and continually fought random battles to gain growth in abilities and of course wealth. Which basically made it, so that I never needed to worry about money ever, plus I was almost always strong enough to continue on in the game and not die.
There is one thing though and that is the secret about the Snowcraft. Which is a type of transportation you can get in the game, allowing you to cross snow covered terrain. If you don't know I'll explain the secret here: Once ou obtain the snowcraft, hold X and press O 15 - 20 times, while in the snowcraft. This will start a minigame of Concentration. An easy way to earn the maximum reward of 40,000 gil, an Elixir and a Phoenix Down, beat the first puzzle and note the locations of the pairs. Restart and quit the game 31 times (don't exit the game screen, just cancel immediately after starting a game) and the thirty second layout is the same as the first board. If you have Mindu in your party, you are close to getting the snowcraft, I can't remember how close, but your within a few hours for sure.

I suggest you give everyone at least the 4 basic spells, I made Fririon a semi-black mage, Maria kind of like a white mage, and Gus only knew 5 spells, in case of Flans or stuff, but AT LEAST know Cure & Life for everyone...

After beating the game on both the ROM & GBA, I'll give you some tips about training various.
MAGIC: For magic, you really don't need too much for attack magic. I usually give one of the three mains only one of each elemental spell. Cure however, you will need on all 3 characters. for support spells, I distribiute shell, protect, haste, and aura accordingly, with no real rhyme or reason. However, if your using the GBA, I would reccommend loading Minwu, Josef, and Ricard up with good spells, & getting rid of Minwu's bad ones. WEAPONS: (I have divided this up into 3 sections) SECTION ONE: Easy enough, I give Firion 2 swords, Guy 2 Axes, and Maria 2 Staffs. Minwu also gets 2 staffs, and if your strong enough or know how to cheat well AND your playing the GBA, Go down to Mysidia & get the Power staffs, and Ogrekillers. (Mainly the Staffs for Minwu, he'll need them in SoR) Also, when I get Josef, I also train him in an Axe/Spear combo for SoR, but skip those steps if your not playing on the GBA. SECTION TWO: (Around Dragoon Cave) I start giving them shields for everyone. You'll know when you get to this point when the enemies start doing like 400+ damage with physical attacks. Keep working until you get their evades high (around 6 or 8-99%, if you can.) Section Three: (After the Rebels reclaim the throne/Cyclone) This is the time when you can blaze through the game with my secret technique! What I do is I equip Firion with 2 shields, while everyone else gets a bow in the back row. By this time, hopefully Firion can get his evade to about 12-99%, which is about all he needs. After that, try giving him 1 sword, and see if his percentage drops a lot. If it's still in the 90's range, you should be ok. Your probably wondering what in the hell I am doing. But, by giving Firion 2 shields and putting everyone else in the back row, I am making sure that ALL physical attacks are aimed at him, and when they try to hit him, they all miss! This is a great strategy for saving energy when your going through a long area, like most of the final dungeons. However, if you know that a boss is going to cast magic all battle, make sure you also prepare for that accordingly. But its pretty hard to lose with a set-up like that, just keep building up your guy's bow levels. Good luck, and I hope those strategies work for you guys. |
