Favorite... "Unnappreciated" Characters

That's right. This thread is dedicated to those lovable losers, the video game rejects! I scoured this forum, (really, I did...) but to my SHOCK, I did not find a thread similar in form to this one. So, without further ado...

I have always loved Cait Sith. However, I've found that there are a lot of people out there who are playah haters. Why all the hatin'? Without Cait Sith, FF7 would've been NOTHING but hard-asses. He was the sole comic-relief character of that game, besides Yuffie (but she was just... no, this thread is about LOVIN', not hatin'!!)

Besides that, Cait Sith had a REASON for betraying the party. He did it because he thought it was in the best interest of the people of Midgar, who he was ALWAYS looking out for. I know a lot of people hate him for being a cat on top of a stuffed animal, but I think that's a pretty cool look, myself.

My next choice, I have featured in my avatar. That's right, I'm talkin' 'bout Croco! I just thought he was a cool bad guy. Maybe mostly for cosmetic reasons, but I also liked the attitude, the personality, and the word usage, as well. "Fungah, foiled again!" When I search the net, I don't hear much about him, however. Croco is under appreciated, in my humble opinion. He is a PIMP.

Third, from the same game, is Geno. A character that I thought to be under appreciated, but if you look at the best 16-bit mage's poll (at least the last time I looked) he was going neck and neck against Rydia. Although if you do a search for his name on, say, Google, you will probably find nothing on him. At least I did, last time I looked. Sad, isn't it?

Now, fourth, I dunno if she was so much under appreciated by fans, so much as she was under appreciated by the game developers themselves... but this spot goes to Freya Crescent. I know, I know, you will find all sorts of crap on her when you do a search on Google. However, how much can you find on her when you actually play Final Fantasy 9? Very little. She's there, kicking ass and gaining character development, for about a quarter of the game, but then, all of a sudden, POOF! No more about her.

Sure, she's separated from your party for a little while, but once she's back in your party, she is basically only there to fight, and be Amarant’s bitch. It’s true! All she does from the point she’s back in your party and on, is serve as a tool to develop Amarant as a character, and to show his story (if you call THAT a story…)

Spoiler: And then, somehow, she somehow ends up with Sir Fratley again? Why? He CLEARLY didn’t care enough about her when he still had his memory to be with her. I mean, there was PLENTY of time between the point that she goes looking for him and he loses his memory for him to go back to see her. But he DOESN’T. Freya’s is a one-sided love. She’d be better off with Amarant, maybe.

Hmmmmmm.... Thats really odd I used Geno and Freya in my main partys. Geat minds, think alike eh?

As for unnapriacied characters I always liked Umaro, and to be honest I never really like Cait Sith but if you actually look at him he's one of the better characters, awsome str, vit and his ultimate weapon is that same as Clouds, hes just a little lacking in the limit break department.

Unnappreciated badguys hmmm.... Maybe Ultros and Croco, they kind of remind me of each other, keep coming back with new ways to try to beat you. But I think an unnapreciated badguy is AtmaWeapon/Atma. I thought he was a pain in the ass the first time I played through. And hes also a weapon, I really wish they had went into more detail with him.

And I know this is the exact opposite of your topic but who do you think is over appreciated? I think Vincent Valentine is, I mean he looks kool has a neat little storey but his stats suck, his weapons suck, his limits suck, hes just aa really crappy character that always seems to make his way into my main party.

I'd have to say that the most unnappreciated characters would be most of the chrono cross characters. No one use's them.

Most unnappreciated bad guys would be the dragons in ff6.
I hated fighting them just because I hate the Crusaders esper but oh well.

Most unappreciated but in some cases (CS: Blue Shit) the most venerated of characters - Barney the Security Guard from Half-Life (and now Half-Life 2).

I mean, they made a mod about him that they turned into a full version game! That, my friends, is an underappreciated character coming back to get you. MWAHAHAHAHAH!

I'd have to say the vast majority of the minor party members both from Star Ocean 2 & 3. From Chisato to Peppita, each game seems to have its fair share of half-decent characters never used. I've heard people rip at Chisato, for example, yet she was one of the characters I came to use a lot. Maybe I just have a thing for writers who can fight! ^^

This is an excellent question.

To me it is going to have to be Lavitz from the Legend of Dragoon. His storyline was superb and his personality or character was captivating. He is overshadowed alot by the events of the game, but he was a character that deserved alot more props than what he got.

Also Mog from FF VI, I know he's on the cover but alot of people I don't think found him that useful in the game, while I considered him to be a very versatile warrior.

As far as enemies, I think the most unappreciated enemy is either the Imp or Abyss Worm from FF II or FF V. They are destroyers plain and simple and show up in packs of up to 8 for Imps and 5 for Abyss Worms. I have never seen a computer AI work so well with a monster in any FF game, aside from the optional superbosses of course where every attack they do is deadly. The Imps cast Muddle 16, and you can imagine how much that fuc*s you up. The Abyss Worms will whittle each character down and then cast Twister 13 and kill your whole party.

I don't think people notice how tough those monsters really are.

I'd have to agree with you on that one....some of the characters were a little annoying, but most of the 40 some different char. you could chose from were really good.

Heh...Chrono Cross characters are mostly unappreciated because its such a long list, and most of the characters aren't really meant to be powerhouses, but comic relief characters ('cept Pip. Pip rules, 'cause he's cute and he can evolve...OMG, Pokemon invaded Square/Squeenix!!! Egad!!!!) Which reminds me of the Suikoden games. Lots and lots of characters, and most of them aren't really warriors but cooks and stuff. They must be some of the most unappreciated characters ever, since their combos and stuuf do not compensate for the powerhouses this game presents to ya.

Now, for unappreciated enemies (thanks Cobain!!!), I don't know about Imps or Abyss Worms, but the Liveflayers and Mindflayers in Star Ocean 2 still give me the creeps...jeez, even Iselia-Queen's not as cheesy as these guys. It's just SOOOO frustrating getting to 8th level in the bonus dungeon, with the best armor, weapons, epic levels, and still they hand down your kissers to ya. Losing HPs by the thousands with one hit (about 5~6 hits per attack, dealing each a 1000 damage), or losing MP in equal matter simply is not funny. But worse...the Funnythieves lv. 100 in swarms really pisses me off too, and they have more chances of being beaten than the last combo. Regardless of they being in the secret dungeon, these maladies shouldn't be underestimated. Granted, AI has nothing to do with them, which still deals some sense of respect to the Imps and A. Worms, but still annoying.

How about the prince from the Katamari games. Who is more underappreciated then that? He works hard to roll up the whole world and his dad is not even appreciative, and then when he goes home to rest from a hard day of rolling he can't even fit his oversized head on a standard pillow!
