The appearance of WarMech is completely random. I've heard rumored at some point in time that the odds are around 1:1000 of finding him, so you might spend a LOT of time looking for him.
He is not a boss you need to beat to finish the game, so unless you want to fight him for some odd reason, I would suggest simply moving on to Tiamat and kill the dragon instead. ANd in case you did not already know, WarMech only appears on the long bridge just outside of Tiamat's chamber, so once you reach Tiamat simply head back out and roam up and down along that narrow stretch of path.

Oh, I know you don't need to beat Warmech to finish the game--I've already beaten the game. I was also already aware that he only comes in that long hallway. I was not, however, aware that the odds of finding him are that bad....I've actually fought him and beaten him before, but I'm trying to take him down with my new party of super-powered White Wizards.
But man, that ratio...*faints* |

Mech-hunting
From my experiences with the original NES cartridge, I would simply recommend walking back and forth on the bridge by Tiamat's room.
As for finding our elusive friend on the PSX version, I've found that the only time I've fought one I had to play normal mode (i.e., not easy) and walk through the entire Tower and Sky Castle without sprinting or using the memo file--at all. This method was also necessary for finding the Rhyos and Iron Gollum in the TOF 2000 years in the past. Of course, it could be chance, but this was the only way I found one on the PSX version. |

The chance of running into Warmech are 1 in 64 on each tile of the board. However the chances of a different monster are greater. Therefore when you run into a battle, it calculates and 63 times out of 64 battles, it will be someone or something other than the Warmech.
You don't need to beat him to conquer the game, but you do need to beat him if you want to complete the bestiary of the game. Just be patient, as with any other FF game, and you will eventually meet the machine.

cookiemonbc: Everything you've suggested I've been doing--except the part sprinting. I didn't realize that might have an affect. I'll try it without sprinting. Thanks.
Cobain: I'll certainly give him another try. I don't know why he's so afraid of my White Wizards...*shrugs* Thanks. |

He is right about the 1/64. The rarity of battles cannot exceed 1/255 (I think it's not 1/256)... those darn hexidecimals, lol.
1:1000 is crazy! Maybe 1 in a thousand steps, because it is 1/64 battles. Just keep trying! I dunno about not sprinting, I doubt they put something in to lower the occurences on Warmech if you are sprinting... It would seem to raise, because you would be covering more ground. |

Sprinting
That's a good point, and just to back it up, when playing on DoS, I would highly recommend sprinting just the speed up the number of battles you encounter (the two warmech's i've faced both arrived while I was sprinting on the bridge). Maybe that one occurrence on the PSX version made me superstitious. I think you're right and that the chances are about 1/64...but it's not like the cart where encounters were guaranteed over the course of 255 battles. I think in both of the newer versions, the likelihood is purely statistical. I wonder if he ever found the warmech/death machine...

Ok, I have a question...
I am at the part of the game where you have to go back to Melmond and talk to the "famous dr." to get him to tell you how to speak Lufenian. I have the special water the fairy game me, but he isn't doing anything but say "What?? You've never heard of me??!!" thing. I am playuing the GBA version, though I would think that would not change from the original, but I could be wrong... What am I doing wrong or not doing here??

Ah yes, I can assist you. Forgive me if I use alternate names for things, as I am only accustomed to the NES version. Therefore, the names of some things may have been altered from what I know. But the idea will be the same.
So you have the Oxyale from the fairy in the bottle? Good, now you can enter the Sea Shrine from the town of Onrac. You know, the town with that little submarine. From there you'll want to go up flights of stairs to the "top" level (Kraken, the boss, is on the lowest level). This is the room with all the mermaids in it, and there is a lot of treasure. Make sure you equip ALL the Opal armor on your Knight, because it is great stuff. One of the chests will contain a Slab (Tablet in your version, I think), which is the item you need to give to Dr. Unne back in Melmond. Then you can speak Lufeinian.
