Well, that was quicker than I expected... as unfortunate as that is...
Kara prepared herself for the night to come. Most of her wounds had healed, but the scars ran deep and thick. Her right shoulder still had a bit of an indention from the chunk of skin Zet had chewed off of it, and on her left leg remained the garish reminder of Zet's sword. Most of her motion had returned and she decided she was well enough to continue. To avoid the pure awkwardness of her clothing, she had bought a new pair of shorts to replace her shredded pants. They were black and fairly short, but tasteful -- for the most part. Her bronze top was in heavy need of a polishing, though her helmet still shone brightly. Kara decided that tonight was the night to finally wear her ancient life-saver, and she set it near the door. She took off her top and pulled out an old rag, hoping no one would walk in on her. She had checked the list earlier for her scheduled match. Night. Just wonderful, she thought, really wonderful. Her magic would not be at its strongest without the burning sun above, but she could still deal quite a bit of damage. Her body always seemed to push harder at night though, making for more exciting physical battles. There was no given location, only a blank space, as though it were first choice. She spotted a chunk of chalk on a small ledge near the wall and picked it up, debating the choices in her head. Field by the burnt forest. With her top finely polished, Kara re-clothed herself and picked up her helmet, walking out the door. She wandered through the halls for a moment, looking for familiar faces. None. None except the little girl whose face she had nearly obliterated two weeks prior. The little girl hid in fright and Kara chuckled to herself. She walked out of the grand arches and into the sunset. The charred remains of the forest she had admired so much were just to her left. She walked along the stone path until it curved away; now in the grass, she continued a considerable distance into the field. People had already started to gather, patiently awaiting the magic barrier that would be set up by the judges within the hour. Kara could still smell burning wood, and looked at the blackened earth in front of her. There were bits and pieces of tree stumps, but only one tree remained. It stood at least a hundred feet high -- half of it black and grey as charcoal -- and the leaves cast a long shadow to the east with the light disappearing. Kara lay out on the grass, enjoying the stars as they appeared one by one, and waited. |
