In my opinion, I think American anime should be called cartoons....and I don't really favour one more than the other. I think some "american anime" are quite cool eg. TMNT, teen titians....etc..etc...

Japanese anime are also awesome. eg. Spirited Away...etc..etc...

Yea. Only Japanese animation can be called "anime".

If it's American, it's a "cartoon", correctly speaking.

I, personally, prefer anime to cartoons. Usually, they have deeper stories, funnier jokes, and the animation just kicks ass.

So yeah, like I and so many others have said before, DO NOT call non-Japanese animation ANIME, just call them cartoons. Yep.
Anime in Japanese means Animation as well, if you notice "anime" is written in Katakana, which is their secon writing form, after Hiragana, before you learn Kanji (Chinese Characters) Katakana is used for sounds and foreign words, so they probably took this word Anime, from the word Animation, and it stuck. Or they just stole the word from the French, iono.

So what about French cartoons? They're non-Japanese animation, and that is their word for Animation, so you could call French Animation "Anime"

Also, this term "Cartoon" is basically Animation as well, you can debate this over and over, but what it all comes down to, is that it's still Animation. These are then just later brought up into different categories of Animation. This whole "American Anime" and what not American animation with Japanese Anime characteristics.. it's all just terms people give them. What it should come down to is what you're watching. If it's good, keep watching it, if it's not, change the channel.

My opinion of the matter here is that American animation has its ups and downs, the downs are the classical cartoons that I've grown up with, and miss. lol the ones with somewhat of a plot line and corny jokes at the end so they end on a good note. Now it's all this weird shit to entertain the little kids with like Monkey classmates, or some random Imaginary friend crap.. Things just went down after Hanna-Barbara man...

I agree with you Keisuke. The cartoons I grew up with were great for their time but the modern stuff...blah. I can't stand it. The animation style alone of most cartoons just completely turns me away these days, and that's before I even get to the utterly ridiculous plots, contrived humor, and flat characters. Very few cartoons are worth watching, in my opinion.

I prefer something with an actual plot, with interesting characters, and that's more or less what anime is. Sure I've seen silly anime that probably aren't much better than the type of cartoons I mentioned, but that's a much much smaller percentage. Basically, it's the quality. Anime is a much higher quality than cartoons because it's taken seriously by the people who make them and it shows. Why waste my time sifting through junk cartoons when I have a much better chance of finding something I'll enjoy with anime, is what it comes down to for me.

Yeah seriously... Cartoon Cartoon... I think messed up the Cartoon network. =T I remember back in the day it was a sweet channel.. they had shit like Smurfs, Snorks, The Flinstones, the Jetsons, basically Everything Hana-Barbara made on that channel, not to mention the Looney Toons, though wasn't all crazy about those, even though they're "legend" I was more of the 30 minute cartoons. Iono.. I know they moved those shows to Boomerang, but they also got rid of the other good cartoons that they used to air on that channel. Like the action ones haha remember Centurions? xD lol it had a pretty cool concept haha.

Japanese anime.

American cartoons are stand alone episodes with villains of the week. Yes, there is a plot but it's utterly slow. Japanese anime have better character developments and plots, not to mention the fact that american cartoons lack mature themes such as bloody violence and nudity.

Teen Titans, Justice League and all those superheroes are crap. You're better off watching Teletubbies. The ONLY good american cartoon is the X-Men franchise (original series, Evolution and movies).

I like J'anime, I like it subbed, but if I had too watch it dubbed I would be able too stand it...most of the time <<'..

Some american cartoons are ok...if your utterly bored out of your mind and nothing better too do..lol.

Teen Titans, Spiderman, x-men, and the such are all good in my book.

But Japanese anime takes the cake here, seriously.
42 for J'Anime 0 for A'Cartoon.

I have been meaning to post here but keep getting side tracked. Anyway Japanese Anime and American Cartoons are two completely different things, the only thing they really have in common is they are drawn and even then completely different from each other.

The thing that I notice and kind of annoys me is that if you are kind of old like mid-twenties and you watch cartoons then you are just a kid at heart however if you watch Anime you are a geek who faps to hentai. Sorry guys but hentai is not exactly something that gets me off.

Anywho... Cartoons; Some are ok but most of it is crappy toilet humour which is not even funny, there is no real maturity to it mostly due to the attitude as it is childish, which is partly due to the way it is drawn, is it a good thing to show them badly drawn images? However I do think they are starting to realize it can be for adults as well (or Teens) with shows like Metalocalypse (Thats American right? Thought it might be European), Family Guy etc, however they still have a fairly long way to go.

As for Japanese one gripe I have as that people think it is "intelligent", I have to say that is not really true, a lot of the ideas, themes and the like have been used before and they just use it in their own style. Another thing is though the background scenes are honestly amazing to look at, the characters still look the same, all of the girls have the same big eyes, the same coloured hair, the same face and body shape, and the guys all look Anorexic and Feminine, not all of them do this but its kind of well... queer to watch? However the Characters personalities are much more refreshing however the same cliches get kind of boring and predictable, though I supose it is somewhat amusing. The Humour for the most part is some of the best, there are only 2 types of shows that make me actually Laugh out Loud and that is Anime and the Monty Python Movies/Sketches. Do not get me wrong, I watch my fair share of Anime but it does contain its flaws.

I really don't care much. I mean I really don't see what the big deal is as long as the story line is good im happy. But if I half to read subtitles then im not even goanna bother.

I like all sorts of shows. But there is a diffrence I will admit.

I mean Japanese Animation as like a continous story line. Where American Animation do the same thing over and over. It's kind of hard to explian.

I chose Japanese anime. The Japanese are just the masters of anime. I haven't met an anime from Japan that I didn't like. Although I really don't watch that much anime.
