As in KH - Final Mix, they probably simpley did not want to reveal the conclusion of the battle. There are a lot of fans of both Cloud and Sephiroth, and they'd be displeasing one cmap or the other if they showed a definite outcome. Even the people behind Advent Children left things rather open ended on Sephiroth's defeat. If he can come back from one omnislash, why not another?
If they went anywehre, then yeah, its probably to KH3
Though I'm hoping if they keep that up we'll see the appearance of Kadaj, Yazoo, and Loz, rather than Sephiroth Round 3.
