The answer to the question in plain english is, once you work your way up to the Moon - after pwning the Giant of Babil you open up the option to change characters when you please. It also allows you to access the Lunar Ruins, which is located in the North/East sector of paths inbetween the Moons Surface / Lunar Ruins tunnels. Hard to describe sorry. Its a piece of rock that resembles that of Cecil's Paladin/Dark Knight tomb thing on Mt. Ordeals.
After having the rom for what seems like almost 6-8 months now, I have only just gotten myself onto the moon full time. So I'll be looking forward to scouting around the place.
