I've unlocked Summoner but honestly I haven't used it too much. Keeping with my general magic usage in other games though, I'll likely use magic a lot more than summons. I'm fairly conservative about my MP so I don't like blowing it all on summons unless it's a strong boss or something. The rest of the time lower level magic, or even none at all, will do just fine.
