Both of my grandfathers were in WWII. My mom's dad was in the Air Force, doing God knows what. My dad's dad was a Marine, island hopping, most notably on Iwo Jima. I read a commendation that he had received and supposedly upon landing on the island, the supply sergeant was injured or killed, and he had decided to assume his duties and to get supply lines going from the boats to the encampments. Also, according to my gandma, he had to go tunnel clearing with a flamethrower once.
My uncle (mom's brother) fought in Vietnam and was killed. In doing some research, he was injured by a mortar in the Tay Ninh province and and died from his wounds. He was a paratrooper in the 51st cavalry. And thats all I know.
My dad was supposed to go to Nam, but he was always a few pounds too fat. Funny story, actually. He was working in a little candy store at the time when he was drafted. The owner, a real cheap Jew, as my dad called him, didn't want to hire someone else while my dad was away, because that would cost more money. Basically, the owner kept giving him snacks and feeding him extra just to keep him just slightly over the limit, and thus most likely sparing his life.
I have a cousin from Arizona that's currently a fighter pilot, but I've never met them, just heard of them lol.
