I'm not quite sure, but...I recall that FFT:A was originally a port of FFT for the GBA. All of a sudden, they changed the idea, and made a new game. Any reason why?
The main reason, IMO, is that no one was willing to pay 40 or so bucks to play the same game again, regardless of being portable, or fixing the translation. Wanna replay? Fine, get the original. Everybody must have laughed or protested because of the chopped-up translation, but face it: the PSX version is an awesome game. So, I guess that, for a good while, Squeenix won't touch the FFT franchise, instead giving it a good rest. See...the development team that made FFT, FFT:A and Vagrant Story also made recently FFXII, so these guys are dead tired, and wouldn't have time for making another game. So, maybe a month or two of rest, and Squeenix will ask them to cooperate on another game.
I would ask for yet another FFT game. Brand new. But, these guys deserve a rest, for God's sake. So, let them rest a good time, have some vacations, have some family time, and then ask for a game.
