I, personally, think it's worth your while. A lot of players left the game when World of Warcraft came out, but almost all of them have come back to Final Fantasy XI. So, if you're interested in playing, it's at least worth giving it a chance. It's definitely not your average game... it's got an amazing storyline which (I'll admit it) takes forever to uncover due to the hundreds of hours you'll need to complete the game.
To put things into perspective, my playtime for the game is more than 13 days -- 13 days is 312 hours as it is. Many other players have gametime lengths of 50 days.... 80 days... and still haven't finished the game. There's SO much to do aside from just the major storyline, and the game has three or four different tiers of ending bosses. It's insane, as far as depth goes.
Add onto that the fact that there are currently 16 different job classes -- 19 when the next expansion comes out next month -- and there are a ton of jobs you can level and master as well. Not to mention all of the different crafting skills you can learn and level as you go, creating High Quality equipment, foods, and other items. Questing for fame in the three cities is always fun, and gets you into all the little side-stories. Fame is required to access certain items, other quests, and even some of your main storyline missions.
Basically, the game is more thorough than any Final Fantasy I've ever known.
