Hmm... if you're in Galuf's world then it's probably too late to go back and get these, but Blue Mages do have several skills that make them decidedly un-useless.
White Wind - learn from Whirldemon in the floating city: Arguably the best healing spell in the game. Reasonably priced, heals the entire party for a boatload of HP, and doesn't care whether they're undead or not.
Aero 1/2/3 - learn from a handful of dudes, but if you're in Galuf's world you've probably missed most of your easy opportunities: The Blue Mage version of Fire/Ice/Bolt. A bit less powerful, but does the trick. Aero 2 could have been learned inside the floating city.
1000 Needles a.k.a. Blowfish (depends on your translation) - learn from Lamia thingies inside the floating city. Good, but expensive.
Emission - learn from the rockets on the outside of the floating city. Fire2 for half the price.
Lv5 Doom a.k.a. FFV's version of Vanish-Doom - learn from Page 64 in the Ancient Library: Fairly cheaply priced, multi-target removal spell with 100% accuracy. Drops about 20/30% of enemies in the game, including a fair number of bosses. Don't use this if you don't wanna be cheap.
Aqua Rake - learn from the dudes in the desert between Karnak and the Ancient Library. Usually not worth it, but mad ownage on anything weak to water.
Blood Suck - lean from just about any bat enemy in the game. Costs 2 MP, drains mad HP ([caster's_max_HP - caster's_current_HP] / 2). How can you lose?
On top of that, late game Blue Magic massively rocks.
Don't worry, you're not the first person to claim that Blue Magic sucks. Admittedly it's a bit harder to use than normal magic, but I think it's one of the best skillsets in the game.
