I didn't notice the bard, so I can't comment on that but I doubt it's Edward.
As far as the similarities between the sprites and there previous game counterparts, I think that was Square just be lazy with the graphics in this game. I mean who here hasn't suggested that yet? They just took the easy way out with the graphics and copied what they could.
While I agree they look similar, I doubt it was intentional cameo appearances of the older characters. More like copying because it's faster and easier than designing new.
