I'm gonna go with FFX. Even though my opinion on this wavers a lot, right now I'd have to say that FFX is my favorite in the series. The reason for that is it introduced so many things in the story that were much different than anything seen in the FF series before. Sin, the struggle between the people of faith (Yevon) and those that used the forbidden machina (Al Bhed), the Fayth, the role of summoners, there were just so many fresh ideas in the game that it was hard for me to put down.

The battle system I thought was very good. Like in most of the recent Final Fantasies, you could theoretically make it so that all your characters would have all the same abilities and what not, but the sphere grid was set up so that throughout most of the game your characters were pretty unique. Yuna and Lulu were mages, Rikku was your agile theif, Kimarhi and Auron were your big hitters and Tidus and Wakka were the fast, accurate attackers.

The thing I liked most about the game though was probably the fact that the game was less focused on a group led by your main character trying to save the world kind of thing. Yeah, Sin was threatening all of Spira and everything, but it wasn't like there was a Meteor was coming down on the planet or Ultimecia was trying to compress time or something like that. Sin would have eventually been destroyed by someone else had they not done it. Also, for once, the main character isn't even really the center or the story, or the leader of the group until the end of the game. Well, I guess he's kind of the center of the story for the game, but in the big picture, Yuna is really the one who the focus is on. She's the one who needs to defeat Sin, Tidus is just a guardian. I really liked this approach to the game, how it wasn't all about "Ok, how is the main character going to defeat the evil power thats threatening the world." It focused more on the story and the events leading up to how the conflict was going to be resolved, told through the eyes of the main character. Thats why I think FFX has the best story in the series, well, that and FFT are pretty close for me, FFT has such a deep and twisting story.

I think the fact that I hadn't played FF1 until recently kinda skewed my decision on this, but it was just too outdated for me. Game was too short, gameplay wasn't exciting enough, story was deep enough, characters weren't deep enough, just really couldn't keep hold of my attention.
