Home Alone is show EVERY christmas here. I can remember it so vividly.
What with staying at the hotel in the city, and the big toy store. I remember seeing that and thinking "Wow, I wish I had all those toys". Which is something completely different from what I'd say now since I know swear words.

As you say, SB, at a young age the films were a great laugh. The contraptions and plans that Culkin came up with would probably have taken a good few hours in itself but kids don't really consider things like that. Also, since the humour is focused on a fairly slapstick style involving the two bumbling criminals this is where Home Alone 1 & 2 really do well. Me and my friends loved them. Although at the end of each film I'd point out the cliché of someone, who Culkin thought was nasty, saving him from a lot of pain. (The old man with the shovel and that bird feeding woman respectively). On retrospect I'd have preferred it if he had gotten shot. That would make it something I'd laugh at now I'm older.
Home Alone 3 was disappointing. I went to the cinema to watch this and I remember thinking it didn't have the same "feel" to the original ones. Ah, well.

The universal cynic is you, my friend!
Realism? Its a children's film. I'd hate to think what you'd say if you saw 101 Dalmations. :S While we're on realism, lets consider this:
Lets consider that there is a quantifiable demographic of 8 year old children, such as what you seemed to have been; the realism craving child.
Can anyone think of many examples of this demographic? Enough to warrent a film or genre aimed at them? No.
Now lets take a look at a similar demographic, but the children are now considered 'the norm'. How many examples can someone think for this demographic? Very many.
Can you see what I'm getting at? No script writer is going to give two-shits about a
very minor demographic of children who'd rather watch realistic children's films. Therefore, do not expect realism and you will not be disappointed.
