Answer to you question. You are almost done with the first disc. I would say about 3/4 done with the first disc. As to the whole game, you have barely scratched the surface. There is a whole lot more to the game. FFVIII was my first FF game too and I fell in love with the game. I couldn't stop playing it. As to how to get to the garden: Get on a train in Timber heading to Dollet, and then get off at East Acadamy Station, then move the camera around you and you should see a small forest between a gap of mountains, you should past through here, and Galbadia Garden is just on the other side, just rotate the camera when your through and you'll see it.
