I see what you're saying about the swords. I never really liked guns in FF that much. Though you would think a gun would stack the deck in your favor, it always seems like guns are relatively weak.
For me, FFIV is the ultimate knight's tale. Cecil was the main character, the chosen knight. Sword, shield, awesome armor.
