FFVII (I never saw VI, so I can't say for sure about it) was a total departure from the previous games in the series, if for no other reason than the improved graphics and control capabilities of the Playstation. FFX was another departure given the increased capabilities of the PS2. While both were more graphics abilities than anything else, they ushered in a new way of developing and playing Final Fantasy. The turn-based battle system was and is a hold-over to the older versions of the series.

As the technology improves, in graphics, animations and in control capabilities, the way these games are developed and played must change. The eye of technology is ever on the future, not the past.

Think about this. How well would a turn-based battle system work in a virtual realm where the player actually participates in the battles (even if they are assuming the role of a character in doing so)? Could you see yourself "standing" there and waiting for the other players to have their turn and not becoming impatient?

And before you say that this is beside the point, think about it. This is the point! The day is coming when games will be virtual and we will play the game "first-hand", not through a controller and looking at a screen. (Holodeck here we come)

FFXIII is just another step in that direction, as is XII.
